On January 12th, I will be flying to Gabon with film-maker Toby Smith to check out the BTO radio-tagged cuckoos that are wintering in the forests there. This will become the second half of the cuckoo story, ‘Are you going, Cuckoo?’ . A story which started at the Fylingdales RAF base in North Yorkshire, where we tagged ‘Vigilamus’, the bird named by veteran RAF man Mick Carrol, who sadly died of cancer before his bird made it across the Mediterranean.
